Charities We Support

We’ve been operating for eight years now, and have had time to develop a fairly orderly approach to our grants.

Strategic Investments

We have identified a set of “strategic investments” that satisfy these criteria:

  • They represent the various areas of emphasis identified in our mission statement.
  • Their work has the potential to accomplish significant, sustainable, long-term improvements in their respective areas.
  • We like them.
  • We’re willing to fund them at a significant level, relative to our Foundation’s resources.

These strategic investments currently include the following:
ACLU Foundation
Acumen Fund
Americans United for the Separation of Church and State
Bell Policy Center
The Carter Center
Engineers Without Borders
FINCA International
Habitat for Humanity
iDE (International Development Enterprises)
Rocky Mountain Institute
Rocky Mountain MicroFinance Institute
Room to Read
Southern Poverty Law Center
Technoserve

Special Projects
From the strategic investments list, we also identify one or two “special projects” each year that we fund at a higher level. We’ve done special projects with these organizations so far:

Acumen Fund
The Carter Center
Engineers Without Borders
FINCA International
Habitat for Humanity (Zambia)
iDE (International Development Enterprises) (3 projects)
Rocky Mountain Institute (3 projects)
TechnoServe (2 projects)

Tactical Grants
In addition to these, we provide smaller grants to charities on our “tactical” list. These are usually charitable organizations in our mission areas that focus on helping with today’s problems, rather than developing long-term solutions. There are about 40 charities on this list. Examples are:

Doctors Without Borders
Orbis Interational
Parker (Colorado) Task Force

Denver-Area Grants
We provide support for a number of Denver-area cultural organizations:

Colorado Historical Society
Colorado Public Radio
Denver Art Museum
Denver Museum of Nature and Science
Douglas County Libraries Foundation
Morrison Natural History Museum
Rocky Mountain PBS
St. Andrew Society of Colorado
Swallow Hill Music Center

Personal-Interest Charities
And we have another 40-or-so charities we support out of personal interest, that aren’t on any of the above lists. Most of these grants are quite small, but there are a few exceptions.
